Remind people to turn off under counter desk lights or overhead office lights when they are away from their desk. Make sure heating and cooling units are set to correct temperatures as prescribed by Texas Facilities Commission (TFC). Turn off computer monitors when away from your desk (leave the main unit on for Information Technology (IT) purposes). Webinar/video training is interactive, audiovisual, etc., and just as effective as in person. Uploading data and using the online versions of documents allows for distance auditing. Travel budgets could be greatly reduced by using electronic technology. [470] Voting 61 votes 69 up votes 8 down votes Active Active Submitted by Community Member 14/Feb/18 3:55 PM #6 Cost Saving Ideas 2018-19 VIDEOCONFERENCE OR WEBINAR TRAINING There are required trainings for certification, and sometimes these trainings are not offered in every area. It would be beneficial for the agency to allow staff that, who require training in an area that is greater than 50 miles from their office, to participate in these trainings via webcast or teleconference. The training materials could be provided to staff by email, and participant information could be tracked in order to ensure that they are truly participating in the required training. There are video conference rooms in several areas, and most have at least two staff that can set up the rooms for this. Invest in cloud storage with highest security measures possible, eliminating the need for space for physical filing cabinets and for staff time spent filing paper. The field offices could have digital files for each consumer. [73] Voting 52 votes 61 up votes 9 down votes Active Active Submitted by Community Member 14/Feb/18 3:55 PM #6 Cost Saving Ideas 2018-19 SUPPLY EXCHANGE Instead of always buying new supplies, conduct a supply exchange every few months on each floor or building where employees turn in their un-used supplies that other people can use. Keep the 'unclaimed' items in a convenient location so people can look there first for what they need. [88] Voting 40 votes 53 up votes 13 down votes Active Active Submitted by Community Member 14/Feb/18 3:55 PM #6 Cost Saving Ideas 2018-19 STAGGER SHIFTS Clerical staff in our office are required to work 8-5. When clients are in the lobby at 5:00 someone has to work overtime until everyone is served. Why not have some people work from 8-5 and others work from 8:30-5:30 to make sure all clients are served but avoid having to pay overtime. [432] Voting 50 votes 63 up votes 13 down votes Active Active Submitted by Community Member 14/Feb/18 3:55 PM #6 Cost Saving Ideas 2018-19 ELIMINATE PRINTED DAILY SCHEDULES Scheduling clerks should email the daily schedule to workers or supervisors instead of printing a paper copy for them. [482] Voting 46 votes 54 up votes 8 down votes Active Active Submitted by Community Member 14/Feb/18 3:55 PM #6 Cost Saving Ideas 2018-19 PROVIDE TABLETS FOR TRAINING The training departments should have tablets for use by students during training sessions. Load the class materials on the tablets instead of printing everything, and provide electronic copies for students to take home. Just print the exercises.
